Friends of MiG, the Romanian electronic duo Makunouchi Bento have released a new EP (available on Bandcamp) that takes their “mixture of all sorts of exotic ear food” in a seriously jazzy direction. Listening to the tracks on Lighthouse Stories, I was convinced Waka X and Qewza had expanded their instrumentation to include live stand up bass, guitar, and drums, but Waka assures me this is not the case and it is “all carefully programmed.” He further described their goal on this album as creating the sound of jazz guitarist John Scofield getting high on Haribo bears (gummy bears for us Americans) in a summer camp. I’m not sure what that’s actually supposed to sound like, but I can confidently say they succeeded capturing the sound. They’ve also succeeded in creating an electronic EP that no way sounds like an electronic EP, and it’s fantastic.
