In the middle of the unfathomable summer of 1999 our two kids from Makunouchi Bento, pupils back then, found themselves thrown together in a summer camp. The camp was held in a disposed lighthouse, somewhere near Bergen, Norway. The shell of the lighthouse was old, so old that everybody saw it as part of the landscape, a painted errection in the fabric of the place.
The lighthouse meat was not bricks or stones, as you might think, but old smoking pipes, retired smoking pipes, donated kindly by the sailors of Seven Seas. It was a lighthouse like no other: at every gust of wind, this lighthouse was spreading exotic tobacco aromas and was whistling like a bunch of healthy green sailors at a passing blonde. It was a lighthouse that unfolded stories without inhaling pause, a contraption that gave birth to unimaginable fluttered adventures for those who know how to listen.
At this point, we must admit openly: until we reached this camp, we were guitarophobes! With such fury and passion as only a child can be. But everything changed when an old sailor has taught us that rum and coke flavour could be highly enhanced if you dip a guitar headstock in the glass and even the guitar sounds better a few hours after this secret manoeuvre. Therefore, this EP contains guitar splinters. It’s our treat, for everyone!
From this very lighthouse we harvested 3 rounded stories, the stories included in this EP. It took us a long time to recall them and share them with you, but that happened because with any story comes great responsibility: the lighthouse stories are travelling with a curse in their tail, a very vague and reasonable danger after all. And it goes like this: every creature who hears the story to the end is required to spread the story to 6 more people at least! (this is likely to be only a mere camp legend, concocted and perpetuated by young naive minds, but we didn’t want to take the risks). Him who does not spread the story suffers a vile fate: he won’t be able to wash or touch the water and whistle in the same time for all his blessed days. Thus, we can assume that he will end sullen and stinky, without friends and destitute of the great inscrutable joy of whistling this (or any other) little sea shanty in the shower:

În misterioasa vară a anului 1999, cei doi Makunouchi Bento, elevi pe vremea aceea, au fost trimiși într-o tabără de vară împreună. Tabăra se ținea într-un far dezafectat, undeva pe lângă Bergen, în Norvegia. Clădirea farului era veche, atât de veche încât toată lumea o vedea ca parte din peisaj, o erecție pictată în natura locului.
Farul nu era făcut din ciment sau cărămidă, cum te-ai gândi, ci din pipe vechi, ieșite la pensie, donate de marinari din toată lumea. Era un far fără pereche: un far care la fiecare adiere de vânt împrăștia arome exotice de tutun din toate colțurile pământului și fluiera ca un grup sănătos de marinari la vederea unei blonde. Era un far care spunea povești fără încetare, o invenție (contraption) complexă născătoare de aventuri nemaiauzite pentru toți cei care știau să asculte.
Recunoaștem deschis: până să ajungem în această tabără am fost chitarofobi amândoi. Cu o înverșunare și o patimă cum numai un copil poate aibă. Treaba s-a schimbat când un marinar bătrân ne-a învățat că romul cu cola e mai aromat daca bagi o coada de chitara pentru cateva minute in pahar si chiar chitara suna mai bine cateva ore dupa aceasta operatie. Drept urmare, acest EP contine si cozi de chitara, pentru toata lumea.
De la acest far am cules si cele 3 povești spuse în EP-ul Lighthouse Stories. A durat mult să ni le amintim și să le împărțim cu voi, dar odată cu orice poveste vine și o responsabilitate: poveștile de la far umblă cu un blestem în coadă. Un blestem asumabil și absolut rezonabil: fiecare creatură care aude povestea până la capăt e obligată să transmită povestea în continuare la cel puțin 6 persoane. (E foarte probabil ca blestemul acesta să fie doar o legendă a taberei, scornită și perpetuată de minți tinere și naive, dar noi nu am dorit să riscăm.) Cine nu răspândește povestea suferă o soartă groaznică: nu mai poate intra în apă în viața lui și nu mai poate fluiera. Astfel, presupunem noi că sfârșește ursuz și puturos, fără prieteni și fără tainica bucurie a fluieratului sub duș.

„Ligthouse Stories” e în opinia mea cel mai bun album apărut în România de mulți ani încoace în domeniul muzicii electronice, și e diferit de tot ce au compus pînă acum Makunouchi Bento. Listening to the tracks on Lighthouse Stories, I was convinced Waka X and Qewza had expanded their instrumentation to include live stand up bass, guitar, and drums, but Waka assures me this is not the case and it is “all carefully programmed.” He further described their goal on this album as creating the sound of jazz guitarist John Scofield getting high on Haribo bears (gummy bears for us Americans) in a summer camp. I’m not sure what that’s actually supposed to sound like, but I can confidently say they succeeded capturing the sound. Before listening, do yourself a favor and read their description of the music. As with all things Makunouchi Bento, it’s absurd, funny, touching and mysterious all rolled into one. According to MB, the lighthouse that inspired these songs is not something built with traditional materials “but old smoking pipes…donated kindly by the sailors of Seven Seas.” What is real and what is imagined? We’ll never know and that’s part of the fun. But as much as I enjoy a good story, the music is even better. Read more...

Lighthouse Stories este o doagă importantă în expresia muzicală timişoreană. Pentru Makunouchi Bento această lucrare reprezintă o nouă fază, cea a maturităţii artistice. Cu concentrarea flexibilă asupra posibilităţilor şi formelor de exprimare, cu nunaţări armonice şi idei ritmice fluide, cu crearea senzaţiei că muzica este modelată de vînt iar noi încercăm să-i răspundem cumva (ca în acel poem al lui Pete Sinfield „I Talk To The Wind“ în-cîntat de King Crimson), acest triptic este un mic triumf al instinctului, al judecăţii şi al tehnicii.
